Unit 1. The Seeds of Change
Students work in a variety of ways to understand how essential trees are to nature, the world and carbon fixing. This unit follows the tree cycle yet focuses on how each stage is of great importance.
1.1. Get Growing
Learning more about soil, seeds and soil, students can grow their own plants. Keeping them in different conditions and environments will give different results, which students can observe and write down in gardening journal.
1.2. Noticing Nature
Play bingo during a nature walk with the students, encouraging them to find for example bird nests, mushrooms, and animal traces. Noticing many ways in which nature uses trees.
1.3. For the Birds
Discuss the importance of birds in wildlife, their different roles and food sources. Build bird feeders, hang them outside, observe the birds and note which species come the most frequently and what kind of food is their favorite.
1.4. Securing the Soil
Discuss deforestation, understand its effects. Conduct an experiment showing that even the roots of the trees have an important role not only for the plants themselves, but also for the life around. How can students make a difference?
